Aaron Koz
Aaron Koz is a traveling movement and circus coach, and co-author of
The Aerial Spinning Reference Guide and The Aerial Inversion Reference Guide. He completed his undergrad in neuroscience and is now in the process of pursing a degree in physical therapy. Moving from Washington, D.C. to NYC, he started at Circus Warehouse’s intensive program, and since has studied under elite coaches in SF, Montreal, and Mexico. He draws from his background in neuroscience to augment his work as a coach and personal trainer and collaborates heavily with physical therapists to help augment and structure his teaching offerings. He has performed and taught internationally in places like Ireland and Saudi Arabia. He recently taught at the Irish Aerial Arts Festival and began working as a Physical Therapy Technician for ACRO Physical Therapy with Angie Prescott, DPT, CSCS (co-author of The Aerial Spinning Reference Guide). He is 50-hour Rocket Yoga trained, and recently had the pleasure of completing another Born to Fly provider's, Alex Allan, Dynamic Rope Teacher Training.

About the Training

Intro to Aerial Straps Teacher Training
The training will support aerial teachers in building their knowledge and curriculum of straps style techniques (using straps, and other apparatus!). During the training, participants will learn a range of static skills, transitions, relevant progressions/regressions, and spotting techniques. The training has been built in collaboration with Australian and US physical and myotherapists with common potential biomechanics injury risks to look out for.

The focus of the curriculum is on scale-ability and building lesson plans that allow for safe progression of students in a group class (without just being a straps conditioning class, but still building strength over time). Functional anatomy/physiology and appropriate strengthening/injury prevention will also be covered to build awareness of correct body mechanics specific to static and dynamic straps-style skills.

Program Highlights
• Skill dictionary of static positions, dynamic techniques, skills and transitions
• Safe spotting techniques
• Progressions/regressions using multiple apparatus geared towards training straps-style skills safely
• Identifying common problems in conceptual techniques and pathways
• Developing effective teaching practices based on current learning research
• Focusing on both strength and conditioning as well as movement patterning
• Functional anatomy/physiology/kinesiology
• Shoulder/thoracic spine health/injury prevention

General Prerequisites Guidelines  (Prerequisites will vary based on training/intensive):
• Minimum of 1 year aerial teaching experience (does not include aerial yoga) or 2-3 or more years training aerial
• 5 pull-ups from dead hang and 5 push-ups
• Ability to safely straight arm invert in the air
• 30 seconds – 1 min dead hang hold with hollow body and shoulder engagement
• Ability to hold meathook for 5-10 seconds or more
• Ability to hold support position for 10-30 seconds or more
• Experience training for reverse meathooks

Application and Audition
Applicants must submit an audition video via email to koz.circ@gmail.com with the above pre-requisites PLUS a demonstration of the following:
– A sequence of aerial movements/skills/sequencing without relying on foot locks (or floor contact) for 30 seconds – 1 minute (on fabric/rope/straps)
OR
– A video teaching an aerial apparatus in a class/lesson setting
In preparation for the training, it is highly recommended to read Emily Scherb’s Applied Anatomy of Aerial Arts as part of the training to have a beginning understanding of anatomy to build off of.
