Aerial YOGA

Picture

 Philosophy and Teaching Methods

Aerial yoga is a practice with a playful spirit. We use the hammock as a prop to both modify and challenge traditional yoga postures, and then we swing and hanging upside-down, too!  Our approach is a balancing of opposites.  We are serious about safety and alignment principles (calling all anatomy nerds!), but we are also lighthearted and enjoy making our classes fun for everyone.

Practices usually begin with grounded postures that gradually transition into the air.  This allows students to find their roots before they begin to fly, keeping them centered for a more pleasant experience.  We teach inversions with safety as our number one priority, and we also offer classes that are inversion-free.  Our aerial yoga course sequence can also be part of the bridge from ground fitness to aerial arts programs.

Prerequisites

Prior to the Live Training:
  • Complete an RYT-200 (or concurrent enrollment in RYT-200 with permission of instructor).
  • Take at least 3 aerial yoga classes to find out if it's something you want to teach.
  • Must be able to be in the air and invert without triggering motion sickness.
  • Must be physically healthy for an 8-day intensive training in aerial yoga.
  • Must be at least 6 months postpartum.

Requirements for Host Studios

  • Studio must be equipped with aerial fabric slings rated for human dynamic loads.
  • Slings must be rigged from points approved by a structural engineer rated at a minimum of 2000 lbf (pounds force) per apparatus/point.  Please consult an aerial rigger for advice on how to rig equipment in your unique space.
  • Studio must be equipped with panel mats for each point, and at least one crash mat (for the whole class to share) for teaching inverted postures.  Once approved as a host, we can assist you in seeking out reputable suppliers for these items.
